How a Beer Social Works

Starting in June of 2006 we’ve held regular Beer Socials to build the Co-op’s support in the Austin community and grow our membership base. If you’ve been to one before or the next event will be your first time, this page was created to help you better understand the events and how you can enjoy them.

Purpose

The Beer Socials have two core purposes. As mentioned above, they are our primary tool to expose new people to our vision and engage their support in making it a reality. The other reason we hold the Beer Socials is as a benefit to our member-owners. With almost two thousand Austinites now part of our Co-op we think it’s important to offer a space for them to interact and get to know each other.

What to Bring

The Beer Socials are open to everyone who is at least 21 years of age, but YOU MUST BRING PHOTO ID. Everyone, no matter how old they look will be carded, and no one without a proper photo identification will be admitted to the event.

Other things that you should bring include:

Chairs – There are a limited number of chairs available, but plenty of space for you to stretch out and enjoy the day.
Friends & Family – New people are always welcome at the Beer Socials, and the events are kid and dog friendly. Note: dogs must be on a leash and children must be accompanied by their parents and/or legal guardians at all times.
Cash – There’s no charge to attend the Beer Social, but if you’d like to buy food or Black Star Co-op merchandise, please bring cash.
Curiosity – Stop by the Membership Table and learn about how you can become a part of our Co-op!
Note: We reserve the right to refuse access to and/or eject anyone who is intoxicated, being a nuisance to other patrons, or otherwise behaving improperly.

Once You’re Inside

At the door we’ll check your ID and give you a wristband. This will serve as your “tickets” for the beer line, and once you’re inside you’ll find several tables and tents with other services.

Check-in Table
This is the first table you’ll come upon, and is where you’ll get your free tasting cup. If this is your first Beer Social, you will also be offered the opportunity to sign up for our announcement email list. Current member-owners should sign-in and receive their member-owner wristbands.

Merchandise Table
This is where you can buy one of our Black Star Co-op pint glasses, t-shirts, baseball caps and bottle openers. Let the world know that you’re a proud owner of the world’s first co-operatively owned brewpub!

Membership Table
Here you’ll usually find a crowd of people learning about the Co-op and signing up to become member-owners. We are very flexible on payment options, so if you’d like to join the Co-op at a Beer Social please bring cash, your checkbook, or a major credit/debit card. If you can’t make to the Beer Social, you can become a member-owner anytime here on the website.

Beer Table
There are two lines, one for guests and another for member-owners. If you are a member-owner, be sure to sign in and get your member-owner wristband at the check-in table to get access to the membership line.
