For this week’s glass night we’re partnering with New Belgium Brewing Company. We’ll be pouring their 1554, Sahti, and yes, the Rodenbach of the Rockies, La Folie! Frambozen and Fat Tire will also be available in bottles and cans respectively.

Buy any of these beers and keep the glass, or for the extra adventurous, we recommend trying a blend of La Folie and 1554 or La Folie and Frambozen…

Brian Corrie from New Belgium will be at the Co-op to answer questions about the beer and their innovations in sustainable brewing. Get here early for cool New Belgium swag. It’s sure to go quick!

See you on Monday.

The smell of malted barley fills the air!

Yes, you read that correctly. Our battlestation 10-barrel brewery from Premier Stainless Systems is now fully operational. We’re brewing a batch of High Esteem right now. Check back throughout the day for additional pictures and videos.

Another election has come and gone, and as always I’m impressed with our new Directors, who were seated by the Board just yesterday afternoon. We had 11 great candidates running for just 5 seats, which made for a highly competitive election this year. We also had a large amount of Member-Owner participation in the voting process–213 votes were cast in this election! So, without further ado, here are the five newly-elected Directors:

  • Therese Adams
  • Dana Curtis
  • Jake Carter
  • George West
  • Jessica Cassidy

Congratulations everyone!

One note of clarification for those who were at the meeting–we initially failed to count a Business Member’s vote properly, leading to an incorrect outcome at the end of the Members’ Assembly meeting. Our Bylaws state that Business Members get two votes. Shortly after the election, we realized that we had only counted a Business Member’s vote once. When the uncounted ballot was added in, it changed the outcome of the election such that Steve Randall was not elected and Jessica Cassidy was. Clearly this was a highly-competitive election! Our thanks to Steve for his understanding of this unintended snafu.

The Board would like to thank everyone for running, and we’d especially like to express our deep gratitude to our outgoing directors Lisa Jones, Ed Menard, and Steve Randall, who have contributed greatly to the Co-op during our transition from a great idea to a great brewpub. Their contributions especially to the development of our Co-op will have long-term positive effects on the Co-op for years to come.

Monday night glass nights continue. Buy the beer and keep the glass!

This week, we’re partnering with the fine folks at Thirsty Planet brewing. We’ll have representatives from the brewery at our pub and all three Thirsty Planet beers on tap! If you’ve been under a rock for the past few months, that’s the Thirsty Goat Amber, Yellow Armadillo Wheat, and Buckethead IPA.

See you on Monday!

Following on our successful Members’ Assembly meeting and Board election, it’s time for another Pub Hours with the Board!

This is part of our new regular schedule for Pub Hours with the Board. Going forward, look for these events on the 1st Monday and 3rd Tuesday of each month.

As you know, these events are not formal meetings, but they are a great opportunity for member-owners (and prospective new members-owners!) to come share a pint or a snack plate with some of our Directors and build stronger connections between the membership and your Board of Directors.

To help build those connections, please join us on Tuesday, November 16th from 7-9 PM for a gathering with YOUR Board of Directors at YOUR brewpub.

See you there!

What do you get when you combine fresh ground beef from Niman Ranch and Windy Bar Ranch with local produce on a bun from Brother’s Bakery? The Black Star Burger, of course!

And with 970 ordered, the Black Star Burger is close on the heels of our Texas Redfish & Chips. So, as with the fish & chips, we’re offering a special promotion to celebrate the coming milestone. If you haven’t tried our burger yet, now is the time to come in and order your very own!

Beginning today at 4PM, the next 30 patrons to order our Black Star Burger will receive all additions and modifications FREE. Bacon? Free. Avocado? Free. How about a fried egg, jalapenos, smoked gouda, and chili on gluten free bread? ALL FREE. If that wasn’t enough, if you’re the lucky 1,000th order, the entire plate is on us!

See you tonight…

Our weekly glass nights continue this evening with Victory Brewing Company. Buy the beer and keep the glass!

We’ve got two Victory taps pouring right now – Hop Devil and Storm King. Try each of them, or put ‘em together and taste the Dark Devil!

The final construction of our brewery, two stainless pipes we’ve been waiting on for months, is finally underway! The single-walled piping for the kettle steam arrived last week, and the double-walled stainless pipe for the burner flue landed this morning.

It’ll look much shinier once it’s installed, which should be done by Wednesday. We’ll keep you posted!

Come to the brewpub this Sunday for the Members’ Assembly meeting. Not only is it a great opportunity to give input into OUR Co-op, we need at least 50 member-owners to meet our quorum requirement!

We’ll consider our new Ends Policies (we’ve achieved our current Ends Policy of opening the world’s first co-operatively owned and worker self-managed brewpub, albeit a bit later than we’d hoped), and we’ll close our voting for five open seats on the Board of Directors.

Member-Owners can vote online through this Saturday or at the brewpub through this Sunday. We’ll count the ballots and announce the winners before the close of the Members’ Assembly meeting this Sunday. Learn about the candidates for the board.

One of the best things about the Black Star Co-op is that we own it!  As Member-Owners, we get to choose who governs the Co-op and what we want this Co-op to achieve next.

Join us this Sunday from 1–4pm. Meet your fellow Black Star Co-op member owners, meet our talented and hard-working Workers’ Assembly, and take part in OUR co-operative.

You’ve probably heard us talk about our Texas Redfish & Chips. And maybe you are one of the 962 patrons who have enjoyed the delectable result of serving the freshest fish & chips in Austin.

If you haven’t tried them yet, now is the time to come in and order your very own. The next 38 patrons to order our Texas redfish & chips will receive $2 off and the 1,000th order we serve will be free!
